Legacy Dramatica Purchases and the Current Platform
If you’ve used Dramatica over the years, thank you. We know the move from desktop software to an online platform raises questions, especially for Mac users who waited for an update.
What happened to the 64-bit Mac update?
Creating a 64-bit version of Dramatica Story Expert required a complete rewrite of the program. After several false starts and partial successes, the decision was made not to release or continue developing a Mac-specific version.
We understand the frustration this caused, particularly if you kept an older operating system while waiting or can no longer install your software.
If you have documents you’d like exported to RTF or PDF files, please send them to Write Brothers through their tech support site, and they’ll convert them for you.
Is the current platform that update?
No. The Dramatica Narrative Platform is a separately developed web application and service. It carries Dramatica’s approach to story development forward, but it is not a compatibility update to the legacy desktop software.
Why a subscription?
Earlier versions were purchased once and installed on your computer. Today’s platform is an ongoing online service, supported by servers, hosting, maintenance, security updates, and continued development.
It also keeps growing, with new Storyform analyses, learning resources, and improvements to the story development tools. Your subscription supports that work and keeps the service available.
AI assistance is optional. The subscription supports the whole platform, including the tools and resources you can use without AI.
Does my earlier purchase include access?
Legacy desktop purchases do not include a subscription to the current platform. Access is available through our published plans. We don’t offer complimentary subscriptions or individually negotiated terms in exchange for legacy licenses.
We understand that some writers prefer a one-time purchase. We appreciate your support, whether or not a subscription is right for you, and want you to have a clear understanding of what we offer today.
